“Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.”
Potentially there is a large threat to schools, students could get people access to school administration by people phishing. This could be avoided by blocking email in school and other forms of communication, this could also be done by educating students. It can be avoided, don’t give away your details when you get asked to in emails. The emails/communications will look familiar however you may notice some spelling mistakes.
Malware:
“Malware, short for malicious software, consists of programming (code, scripts, active content, and other software) designed to disrupt or deny operation, gather information that leads to loss of privacy or exploitation, gain unauthorized access to system resources, and other abusive behaviour”
This is a big threat to schools as it could disrupt school systems and damage computers, this can be stopped by monitoring students who bring memory sticks and other devices. Communicative systems such as email could also be blocked.
Viruses
“A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate itself and spread from one computer to another. A true virus can spread from one computer to another; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive”.
This is a big threat to schools systems, as it could bring a schools network down. Which would disrupt learning. This can be prevented by stopping people bringing USB devices in, and also blocking websites which may contain viruses. Another way to stop viruses is by installing anti-virus software and keeping it updated,.
Spyware
“Spyware is a type of malware that can be installed on computers, and which collects small pieces of information about users without their knowledge.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware
Spyware collects information from users without them knowing, it is able to collect a users passwords, somebody could then access things like bank accounts. This is a threat to schools as students work could be deleted as it were.
Password Security
This is when something such as a users account can only be accessed by entering a certain phrase or word or combination of words and numbers.
This is important to schools as every student should only be able to access there own account, for example, password protection is important when using exam accounts to make sure nobody can temper with them or access things on accounts such as internet, which is classes as cheating in an exam.
Spam
“Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately”.
Spam is when companies or other people, send messages out in bulk to people. These messages can be advertising products or services, however the spam could also be linked to scams trying to get people to hand over credit card details. It is very hard for school to stop spam, however it can be prevented by adding all their contacts to an address book. So they only receive emails from those contacts in your inbox.
